FACTORY: THE RESIDENCY GAME is part of our ongoing design practice engaging with games as empathetic storytelling tools, instruments for conceptual thinking, and opportunities for meaningful play. Games are an experientially rich site from which to interrogate, rehearse, and transform the systems, relationships, and roles we inhabit in our lives, communities, and larger ecosystems. As alternative modes of research, they provide a space to collaboratively envision, rigorously play out, and boldly share strategies to address our sector’s most pressing systemic challenges. Our design is grounded in the belief that the dramaturgy of cultural design is a responsibility shared by all members of the creative community, rather than something to be relegated only to boardrooms, panel discussions, and the offices of those who hold institutional power. Using games interwoven with design thinking and strategic foresight tools, offers strategies to unlock collective decision-making, foster shared leadership, and imagine possible futures.
Previous examples of our work designing games for the arts sector include: culturecapital a trading card game for the performing arts economy, and FARCE (Fictional Arts: Reimagining Creative Ecosystems), a multi-day role-playing tabletop game and idea incubator for imagining arts ecosystems commissioned by CAPACOA and played at the National Arts Centre.
